need wiring diagram
I put my Triumph project away for a couple months due to not having a clue about wiring. Can anybody supply me a diagram for a 750 1977 Triumph (2 coils, battery, turn signals (have to run them in Canada) head light, tail light/brake light .....pretty straight ahead as far as wiring goes... but can't find the right diagram. Thanks bluesguy@mts.net AKA /girdergeek

Hi. Basic "chopper electrics" are about the same the world over. Assuming your ignition is of the same decade as the bike, you should have a single wire coming from your points module --this goes to one of the posts on your coil (it shouldn't matter which one, just as long as you wire both the same). The other post gets a wire direct from the (+) of your battery. Make a shorter wire to jump to the same post on the other coil for the battery (+) wire.
For blinkers, one wire goes from the (+) of your battery to a switch on your handlebars. From there it should go to a signal relay. You can buy these at any auto parts store --they are small, inexpensive, and make that 'tink-tink' sound when activated. They have quiet ones too. From the relay, a wire goes to the blinker itself. The blinker light might have two wires coming out of it --one black and one red. The black goes to ground. The red one gets the power through the relay. If there is no black wire or just one wire, then it is already grounded by being mounted to the bike. Make sure it is not mounted to several cats of paint or it won't work because it won't be getting any (-) power.
Put a 30amp fuse between your regulator and battery. Put a 15amp fuse between your battery and the bike's components.
Once you have wired a chopper you'll see the similarities beyond the different terminology and slight variances in the parts.
Let us know how it's going. Damn nice bike, too.

Thanks jsdiamond, Sounds like you would have no problem wiring up this ol Trumpet. I'll give it a shot and see what I can destroy....I got this far from a rusty frame with a bolt on hardtail....I just kept on buying, fabricating and chroming parts until it started looking like a chopper. I don't know why the electrical is such a brick wall for me.....maybe I have a short in my brain from this Canadian beer....
Thanks for the compliment on it....it's probably a couple hours from firing up for the first time in it's new life. I can't wait.

Haha... I've thought the very same at times. I forgot to mention that if you are running an *electronic* ignition (like a Boyer or something like that) that there may be more than one wire coming from your device. The (+) stuff from the battery should remain as described, but each of the ignition device's wires will need to go to the correct coil. There might also be additional wires that are used for other components; use them or simply tape them off.

B4 you get to far into it you need to identify what you got coming from your stator, can you tell what the colors are that are going to the plug end, is the plug a 2-3-or 4 wire setup. you should have 3 wire for '77, that would be a battery excited stator. 4 wire you'll need a zenor diode and heat sink. Alt. will also confirm If you need to run positive ground instead of a more normal neg. ground. Do you have a fax # I can send you a sketch. a picture is worth a thousand words. You can wire turn signals, horn, brake switch and some other stuff in the mean time. What type of ignition switch ( # of screw connetions) do you have or are you using a couple of toggles? What gauge wire you got, need about 3 differant colors minium, if your really clueless on wiring or you may walk away from it for a mth., get 5 colors( easier to back track if needed) If there all black, will you be able to tell your left and right turns apart from your horn, ignition?ect, ect.

Actualy pos grd is correct based on electron flow, on pos grd engine remove spark plug and hold pencil lead between electrod and frame, spark leaves from center tip going toward electrod treaded into cyl head.(pos grd) On a neg grd system the spark jumps from ground side too center tip back thru plug wire to coil to complete circuit, even though pos grd seems backwards by our current habbits to an electrical engineer in England it made perfect sense.
Just run a magneto,
