Tuesday July 27, 2010

Harley-Davidson, BMW and Yamaha are recalling certain motorcycle models, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

BMW is recalling about 1,900 MY 2005-‘09 R 1200 RT Police motorcycles. The bracket that supports the audible signaling device can break, potentially allowing the signaling device to fall from the vehicle and into the roadway, becoming a hazard, reported the NHTSA.

Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA, is recalling about 700 MY 2009 VMX17 motorcycles manufactured June 2008-March 2009.

Due to an insufficiently crimped connection, there could be excessive electrical resistance in the ground wire from the accelerator position sensor and the throttle position sensor, stated the NHTSA. Excessive resistance can cause incorrect signals to be sent to the engine control unit, leading to unstable idle speed. The recall is expected to begin around July 28.

Also recalling a small number of motorcycles is Harley-Davidson. About 70 MY 2010 FXDF motorcycles with fork leg assemblies were recalled. Manufactured from Feb. 29, 2009-Feb. 9, 2010.

The NHTSA says the fork leg assemblies may have been incorrectly assembled using the wrong springs. Motorcycles containing the wrong springs will have reduced suspension, which may result in reduced traction, which may increase the risk of a crash according to the NHTSA.

My thought is to black out the entire frame, engine, forks, etc... then paint the tank and fenders up like a WWII bomber. Chop the back fender short, polish up the heat fins on the motor, and put a straight bar on it. Other than that I'm gonna chop the pipes to just behind the pegs... and be done with it.

MIDDLEBOROUGH, MA – July 16, 2010 – (Motor Sports Newswire) - Authorities say Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry was rear-ended by a car when he was riding a motorcycle, and he has been treated for minor injuries at a Massachusetts hospital.

Middleborough police say Perry was on his 2009 Ducati Monster 696 early Thursday afternoon when he was struck from behind by a car driven by 62-year-old Linda O’Brien. Both vehicles were traveling at a low speed.

The 59-year-old Perry, who lives in nearby Duxbury, was taken to a hospital and released a couple of hours later. A hospital spokeswoman did not release the nature of his injuries.

O’Brien, who was not injured, was cited for following too closely.

The accident is not expected to affect any of Aerosmith’s scheduled concert dates.

Diamond Bar, CA – July 12, 2010 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – In an effort to move drag racing from the streets to the racetrack, the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) and the Street Performance Council (SPC) have launched an all-new “Racers Against Street Racing” (RASR) website, located at www.rasr.org, that makes it easier for visitors to find a nationwide listing of sanctioned racetracks.

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/“The message is clear and simple: If you want to race, go to a racetrack,” said Chris Kersting, SEMA president and CEO. “There are fun, legal ways for drivers to enjoy racing, and taking it to a track will ultimately save lives.”

The goal of RASR is to educate drivers about the dangers of street racing and aggressive driving stunts that put them — and others — at risk of serious injury and death. The new site features tools that evoke engagement from site visitors. It also provides individuals with a resource to locate professionally controlled environments in which today’s performance and speed enthusiasts can participate in automotive-related events throughout the United States.

Adopted by SEMA in 2001 to spread the message about the dangers of street racing, RASR is comprised of a coalition of auto manufacturers, aftermarket parts companies, retailers, distributors, professional drag racers, sanctioning bodies, race tracks and automotive magazines devoted to promoting legal alternatives to illegal street racing on a national level. RASR is administered through a task force within the SPC and action is driven entirely via a team of volunteers.

“The Street Performance Council is once again excited to be aligned with RASR and feel that with the new direction we can truly make an impact on the street racing,” said Tracie Nunez, SPC Chairman.

RASR and industry professionals are constantly working to spread the word and make it “cool” to get off the streets and onto the track. Local police agencies and racers often partner with RASR to bring better involvement and understanding from both sides. To learn more about the program, visit www.RASR.org.

DULUTH, MN – July 13, 2010 – (Motor Sports Newswire) A group that opposes motorized recreation on public lands is calling on Minnesota to stop spending gas tax dollars on programs for snowmobiles, boats, dirt bikes and ATVs.
Minnesotans for Responsible Recreation launched a campaign this week for using the money to fix deteriorating roads and bridges instead.

The group says almost 3 percent of the state’s annual gas tax revenues are diverted to motorized recreation. It says Minnesotans have paid out $350 million since the 1960s, or about $18.5 million annually.

Sen. Tom Bakk is an ATV owner and chairman of the Senate Tax Committee. He says the diversion has provided Minnesota with high-quality boating opportunities and motorized recreational trails that benefit the rural economy.

Hey guys, I just joined 'Club Chopper' to try to get some advice and some direction in what I need to do to get building my first bike. I've been looking around at part stores and reading up on motorcycle engines, transmissions, etc...

I want to know if anyone has any suggestions as far as good books to read that will show me a step by step on what you need a how a motorcycle goes together. I'm looking to build an old school bobber :]

Im pretty good with mechanics and building things so I think i'm ready for this!
