Rear Fender mount

Hey all,
I noticed yesterday that the rear fender was flopping around more the normal. I found that both these bolts were broken.. I knew I was going to have problems with these bolts because then only go about 1/4" into the fender strut.

Anybody else have problems? I just drilled it out and ran the bolts though the strut.

I don't know what BBC is thinking here

I would rather have a square piece of metal spacer with two holes for the bolts to go in thru.

yeah, that's the next thing I'll be making. It really wouldn't be a problem if the strut was tapped all the way through rather then just 1/4" in...both bolts broke at the ends...

I honestly preffer to go the safe route and if I would have been Big Bear I would have made a triangle 3 bolt strut/spacer for it just to be on the safe side.

Others have drilled it through and tapped it through also.
I did the same because the original hardware that shipped with my kit had bolts that were too short.

My Kit came drilled through with a Bolt and Nylock Nut.

Never even knew the old ones were threaded until I read this.

.

I was lucky, I bought a new 5/16" drill bit and drilled right though it with no problems.....

I started thinking (I know, its about time) and checked the bolts...they were stainless steel, that explains why they broke so easy.....That's my fault for putting the SS bolts in there.

Hey Golfish,

Yep I had the same problem and I did the same thing on two different fenders. BBC finally changed that whole set up to a 1" dia. tapped boss that is welded to the fender strut and then a single 5/8" bolt holdes it to a 3/8" thick bracket on the swingarm. I have had a lot of problems in that area and have had three different rear fenders and three different swingarms before it really got fixed, well fixed that is until the front end fell off!

Stay safe,
Larry
