going to look at this bike friday, what to look for...
I love the bike style, want to buy it, but am worried about it being a daily driver because it was a custom built bike. guy seems to really know his shit, but its a lot of money for me and was wondering if you had any advice for spotting trouble spots or known defects. also im a big guy 6'1 300 lbs if that makes any difference, i currently ride a cross bones but need to sell it to raise some cash but still want a reliable bike to ride. my mechanical skills are very limited. should i be worried about a ultima engine? i know ss best, but is ultima better than revtech? its down to this or like a 2002 big dog or something like iron horse in my 9k price range. any and all feedback appreciated

if your mechanical skills are limited, and your funds are too, then it might not be the bike for you. that might be pretty unpopular advice around here, but that bike is gonna need some regular maintenance, especially if it's your daily driver. it may be very well built, but it's gonna need regular attention. and a rigid with a bigger motor like that is gonna be less forgiving of maintenance practices that are less than strict, by-the-book. which means if you're not paying for a top notch guy to work on it regularly, you will be at some point for more than just regular maintenance.
the other option is to get yourself a '99 softail manual and learn how to do some of these things yourself, spend time every week reading and keeping up with it. if you can discipline yourself for that little bit of commitment, owning that bike will be much more affordable and pleasurable. you'll still take it to a mechanic for stuff, but not as much, and you'll save a lot of money and be able to deal with stuff on the roadside, which would otherwise really cost you.
my recommendation: don't be afraid to take it on, if you know you can carve out a little time weekly to educate yourself and do your own maintenance.

I would examine the tank mounts on the first bike very carefully...ask if they have ever been repaired.

Thanks a lot for the awesome advice. It is greatly appreciated and of course not what I wanted to hear. What did you see on tank? Would a big dog be a choice that's more reliable?

I have 2 friends with big dog's and they spend more time getting repaired then on the road. It could be that these guys are just not lucky but 2 for 2 sucks.

Big Dogs also have quite a few proprietary parts (I.E. --- can't just buy a standard H-D part to make it work). And I'm not going to try and sell you on an AIH bike (what I own), as they too can be a handfull if you get a "bad" one. Parts are easier to interchange with H-D stuff though.
IF* you go out and buy yourself a "custom" bike, be aware that its gonna cost you more $$$ to maintain, just the way it is. In the end its what your "heart" is telling you to do.
Just food for thought, you can pick up a damn nice BD or AIH bike for $9g, 2006-07 models even. I'd be inclined to stay away from anything newer than a 2005 on the American Ironhorse side, later production years seem to have more issues.

2003 and before BD's have no proprietary parts other than the electrical. Anything on those BD's can be swapped with HD parts, excepts for the electrical wiring harness. I had an 03 Pitbull that was an awesome solid bike. If I had one again, i'd rewire as stated above.
I'm not mechanically inclined like most of the folks here, but consider myself savvy enough that with some good advice and a youtube video I can figure something out. If I didn't want to go thru the potential hassles of a custom and wanted a daily driver, honest answer I'd get an HD and just hit the road. If you are dead set on getting this bike, i would also consider asking a reputable mechanic to go with you even if you have to pay for his time it could save you a headache or provide you some reassurance.

If you want a driver and something reliable, why are you getting rid of the Crossbones. You probably won't get much more money for your HD than what you will pay for a rigid bike which will cost money and more work.
