Keep oiling frame or prime frame?

Hey everyone,

I picked up my new Kraft/Tech and am going to start tearing down the old bike soon. In the mean time, I noticed it had a bit of tarnishing, so I've been oiling it with WD40 and it's not getting any worse, so that is good.

My question is, should I just continue to oil it every week or so often or should I just clean the frame top to bottom and prime it? I'm pretty sure I'm going to paint the frame, even though I like the durability of powdercoating, I just can't get the pearly paint color I want in a powdercoat. So based on the fact that I'm 95% sure I will paint the frame, should I just prime it so I can stop oiling it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I would prime it. I cleaned, scuffed and primed my frame the week I got it, knowing I was in no hurry to build. It has protected the steel from moisture and rust, and will be easy to sand off when I'm ready to do the body work.

While oiling it will also protect it, it's messy. Everytime you touch it, then touch any other part you're working with,......there's those oily finger prints you'll be cleaning later.

Not to mention, everything that gets oil on it, will cause headaches for your painter, later.

jesus who told you to oil it? you know how hard it is to get oil off? well, its done so keep oiling it but you're gonna have to sand blast it before primer

Oh who knows... heard it somewhere from someone... It came from Kraft/Tech pretty oily as well... But oh well, what's done is done. I think I'll take it in to get sandblasted at the local powder coat place and then primer it to get that out of the way. I'm sure this build is going to take me some time, so no need to keep oiling it then get oil everywhere and have a headache later... Not that it's not a headache already.

I just bought a new back fender and it came soaked in oil too... So I assume I should do the same thing to it, sandblast and then prime. Guess the gas tank too. fuck me.

Well but shit, if I'm going to modify the back fender (which I am) then I need not prime that yet, keep oiling it so that I can bob it, re-shape it, then sandblast, and then primer.

All these afterthoughts. I assume the whole project will be like this.

All new bare metal parts like fenders, tanks and frames come with an oil appied to the surface so that they won't rust during shipping. In a perfect world, modifications, fab work, body and paint work would begin right away, so the oil will be removed and everything else will be applied.

But,.......like most,.........it will take time to build, and cleaning it and priming it will protect it while you build it.

If you looked at your frame tubing under a strong microscope you'd see a surface more cratered than the moon. WD-40, oil, or whatever gets into those pours and you can clean and wipe until the cows come home and you'll never get it all out.

I did the same thing you did with WD-40 and my paint system failed in numerous places on the frame. And I cleaned the piss out of it with MEK!

So, yes, either prime it right away, or just let the surface rust form. Either is easier to deal with when it's time to paint.

Surface rust is your friend. Believe it or not the little bit of rust that will occur (asuming you're not leaving this out in the weather or covered in plastic) will protect the metal by closing the pores. Like Nick said, that oil will absolutely fuck you. The surface rust will sand off real easy.

Sweet... so basically this frame is now fucked? But that doesn't make sense, the thing came dripping in oil... so how is me applying more oil screwing it?

And won't sandblasting it get into every nook and cranny to get rid of that oil or will it leave some oil spots?

This just isn't adding up, the damn thing came with oil on it straight from Kraft/Tech. I do hope this frame isn't ruined... or that's a cool $450 down the drain.

Your frames is far from ruined. Some guys don't like to put oil on the frame for paint reasons. Just sand blast it and powder coat it. I've never liked to primer my frames because of all the welding of mounts and brackets ect....If your gonna weld on it just wipe it down get out the emery colth and sand down the coating of the tubing to bare metal. Then you have a oil free clean surface for welding. It's not a big deal at all man dont sweat it

Clean it really good then wipe it down with ospho every few months. That will keep the rust to a minimum and will all sandblast off when the time comes.

Not ruined and the oil isn't impossible to clean off. It will take a bit of work but nothing too horrible. Your frame will be fine.

Exactly! is it advisable to oil the frame HELL NO, but trust me the frame is fine and at worse would need an acid bath or equivalent or a good ol sandblasting. Oil is your painters nightmare due to failure but nothing has compromised your frame at all. Good luck--Drew
