Iron Horse Speedo issue

Anybody that has one of these bikes knows about the "wonkiness" of the "digital info center" (speedo).
I've encountered a problem and wonder if anyone else has seen this one.
Once in a while the display, both speedo and tach, will go dark. If you shut the bike off and restart it comes back and the odo and trip are still recording miles even though the display is off. I even had a case yesterday where the digits went dark and the tach display lit up completely from end to end.

If you've seen anything like this, was there any kind of fix short of having the speedo repaired or replacing with a Dakota Digital unit?

When I bought my 2004 Texas Chopper, the tach/speedo would work for up to 5 minutes then go out until bike was restarted. I took the bike in for service/tuneup and mentioned the Speedo issue. The tech checked all the wiring and determined speedo needed repair. After I got bike back, (a couple months, over 1000 miles ago) everything has worked perfectly. Must have been a bad connection in the couplers. Might be worth a try to unplug and clean all the connections with electrical cleaner.

Thanks Corvette. That's something I considered too. I unplugged the connector under the tank. Sprayed with with some Deoxidt contact cleaner and then followed that with some dielectric grease. I've heard that these units don't like moisture. I did get caught in a real downpour one day so, that may have exacerbated the problem.
We'll see!
