For what its worth, I have had a 5 speed FXR that the shift return spring went out on (a major project to replace a $1.00 spring), I hear they have fixed that problem, every 5 speed I have had seem to leak from the main shaft seal eventuly. As for clunky shifting, I have never owned a four speed but the square cut gears of the 5 speed, have a tendancy to clang bang and not have a smooth shift liek they should. I have had a chance to ride a few 6 speeds and marvel at how well they shift in comparison to the 5's. The major reason I am using a 5 speed in my project now is price. I just didn't have the funds to go with a 6 speed.
